Ford Australia invented the long wheelbase luxury segment with the 1967 Fairlane 500. With the BA series, Ford's luxury range included the Fairlane Ghia, the LTD and a new model called the G220. With the G220, Ford recognised there was a new segment to the luxury car market emerging. The G220 targeted this emerging sports luxury market - targeted at a younger audience with the money to spend on a big car that was also rewarding to drive.

FOR SALE from Canberra, ACT is perhaps the finest example of the Fairlane G220 model. With only 25,627 Kilometres on the clock and in as new condition, this G220 is a must for the Fairlane enthusiast. The car was originally delivered to Brad Garlick Ford in Sydney in February 2004 as a Ford executive vehicle. After 6 months, the Fairlane G220 was then retailed by John McGrath Ford in the ACT with 6,313 km on the clock in September 2004.

The G220 was then retailed to a Hugh and Joan McGee of Holt, ACT on the 27th September 2004. The car was sparingly used mostly for long distance drives to visit relatives in Sydney. Purchased by the current owner in 2025 from the 91 year old Mr and Mrs. McGee, the car has always been religiously serviced every 12 months and runs and drives like a dream.

Ford endowed the G220 with the standard Fairlane 220kW/470Nm Barra 220 5.4-litre V8 engine but recalibrated the automatic gearbox to produce sharper shifts with a shorter final drive ratio for snappier acceleration.

Suspension was lifted straight from the Fairmont Ghia, while the other Fairlane Ghia and LTD got the plusher Fairmont set-up.  All three cars have the same steering rack out of the Fairmont Ghia, which is the sportier, heavier choice from SWB BA.

The G220 also gets the larger 17 x 7.5-inch alloy wheels shod with 225/50R17 tyres, while the others make do with only 16in. wheels. The brakes come straight from Falcon and include ABS and EBD, while traction control is standard across the range as well.

On the inside, the G220 is fitted with powered leather seats, leather steering wheel and gear lever, reverse sensing system, six-disc in-dash CD player, dual zone climate control, cruise control and front and side airbags.

Unique G220 items include sports-look black-out front headlights, red leather seats called Redline and brushed aluminium-look trim rather than the woodgrain offered in the Ghia and LTD models.

The current owner has fitted new Bridgestone Potenza 225/50R17 tyres and fitted a new exhaust system from the headers back. The original spare tyre is still in the boot.

Driving the G220 is a real hoot. Winding roads are an enjoyable challenge. You are aware it is a big car, but the ability to hold gears with the manual shifter adds an extra dimension of driver control. Grip and turn-in are impressive as well especially with the new Bridgestone Potenzas at all four corners. You could even say the big Ford is almost nimble.

Being one of the last Fairlane models ever made by Ford, makes this an important long wheel base luxury sports Aussie V8.

Currently on full ACT registration until September 2026 with FG220 personalised plates included for an ACT buyer. Located in Canberra, ACT for your private inspection. (Ref: 6811]
