Owned originally by well known American drag racer of the day, "Wild Bill" Shrewsberry, this stunning Silver blue 289 A code GT Convertible was a gift from Ford to Wild Bill who at the the time had been drag racing for Ford. Soon after receiving the Mustang, Wild Bill changed camps racing for Dodge. Ford demanded he return the Mustang. Instead of complying Wild Bill repainted the car in black and hid it for many years eventually bringing it out of hiding in the late '90s with only 7,000 miles on the clock. Eventually sold and imported to Australia in 2011 the then owner repainted the car in the original Silver Blue and subsequently sold the car to the current owner in 2013.
The car features the all matching numbers 289 4V Windsor V8, 4 speed top loader and LSD diff. This highly optioned car features rare front disc brakes, Deluxe "Pony" interior, styled steel wheels, centre console and the "lighting group" package which added under hood and trunk lighting and the rare 8,000 rpm Rally-Pac tachometer and clock accessory. Mileage is believed to be genuine at 8,760 miles since new. The car was bare metal repainted in 2012 in 2 Pac while retaining the immaculate all original Pony trim.
As per factory specifications the GT Mustang is optioned with the GT Equipment Group which includes power front disc brakes, grille-mounted original fog lights, dual exhaust pipes exiting through the rear valence, stripes on the rocker panels, Styled steel wheels, and 16:1 steering box ratio. The interior is day one full Pony trim with the GT Rallye Pack instrument cluster of tacho and clock mounted onto the steering column and sports centre console. The car is also optioned with power top and AM radio. All gauges work perfectly as does the horn. All chrome and brightwork is in very good condition.
GT cars also came equipped with the Special Handling package, which includes stiffer springs, heavy-duty shocks, a 13/16-inch sway bar and a quicker steering box.
The boot is also fully detailed with factory boot mat, spare wheel and tools.
The GT also comes with a Certificate of Title, import paperwork and documentation and memorabilia relating to Wild Bill Shrewsberry's ownership.
Convertible Mustangs are the most desirable of the early Mustangs and a genuine GT equipped car with a colourful past and extremely low mileage makes for a highly collectible classic Ford.
